GSB SPOTLIGHT INTERNATIONAL
Deeply prolific Bristol-based house connoisseur Andy Compton has released over a dozen albums and close to 100 EPs (either under his own name or as part of The Rurals) on his essential Peng label and imprints like Ralf GUM’s GOGO Music, Chicago’s LARGE Music, Seasons, Viva, Hed Kandi and many others.
Since he started playing and producing music at the age of 16, Compton has looked towards jazz, soul and African music to define his unique sound, which he’s described as “Afro Devon Deep”.
Output from Peng and The Rurals has been the focus of four South Africa-specific collections on House Afrika: 2002’s ‘Sunday Sessions 1’, 2005’s ‘Sunday Sessions 2’, 2010’s 4-CD set ‘House Afrika Grooves’ 2011’s ‘Kholofelo Remixed’, which features a lustrous line-up of top-notch remixes of his material, no less than eight of which come from South African producers. and, most recently the “Experience Peng” tripple pack CD now available on Universal.
On his previous – and surprisingly, given the popularity of his work in SA – first trip to South Africa at the end of 2010, Compton described the original ‘Kholofelo’ album as having “influences from the African music, added to the deep, soulful house I generally produce,” and said he thought it was only natural to get his favorite SA producers involved: “To give it that South African vibe.” He added that deep African house is his “favourite kind of music at the moment, because it has a raw energy. I personally love the rhythms, the beats.”
Since discovering house music in the early ‘90s (and hooking up with vocalist Marie Tweek to form The Rurals), Compton has released a dazzling array of music and worked with an army of artists (from Motown legends to budding underground names like Pirahnahead). He’s been featured on the cover of the seminal DJ Magazine and had his music used in TV show Six Feet Under, while tunes like “Sweeter Sounds” have become bona fide anthems at spots like NY’s Shelter.
GSB SPOTLIGHT SOUTH AFRICA
“HouseHold Funk (also known as HHF) is a brand we’re proud of. It’s who we are. It’s a “full sensory” experience where people really get to enjoy a good night out. We get to listen to the best tracks around, dance till they can’t anymore, connect with friends – new and old – and be thoroughly entertained by different gimmicks only the HHF boys can bring you. It’s a merger of lifestyle and music. But in the end, words can vaguely describe it because only when you’re there, in the flesh, do you really get to take it all in” says HouseHold Funk.
But, it wasn’t always like this.
Before the HHF crew officially assembled, they were just regular kids wanting to go out and have a good time. Problem was, they simply started to see a distinct lack of innovation and excitement in the party scene. And so Mark, Les, Brad and AB did the only other thing they could think of: They tried to see if they could do it better.
Their immediate advantage HHF had when starting up was that 3 of the 4 crew members were established DJ’s and brought with them vast experience. From memorable Thursday nights at Foo Moon Fusion (Melrose Arch) to Picasso’s in Rosebank, as well as Carfax, where they were part of some really successful parties. These were kids that were able to think outside the proverbial box. Add a marketing vision by the 4th crew member and they had their first party date set.
But you can only write so much on paper, from the start; it’s as if it was meant to be. What has really propelled HHF forward in such a short space of time is the energy created amongst the 4 members working hard and smart to bring you each event. That energy moves down their support lines (“friends to which we owe plenty to” – writes HHF) and across the media network turning it into a true HouseHold Funk experience.
Since the beginning, the HHF crew has built a true and sizeable following of loyal supporters and friends; capturing a vast and youthful market of vibrant, upbeat and contemporary individuals…
“If its rocking the small room beats and crowds or the masses. Our interest is all the same. And that’s to get you moving” says HouseHold Funk.
FOCUS ON IMPRINTS F! RECORDS
F! Records was started by Nic Burger in 2009 as a sub division of Soul Candi Records. Nic came from 10 years at Gallo (South Africa’s oldest record label) heading up what was then South Africa’s leading dance label “RPM Dance”. MUSIC REVIEW ALBUM
Soul Candi Records presents South African House Beats. The 45-track compilation features some of the best producers coming out of the motherland – with names like: Cuebur, Mi Casa, Julian Gomes, Mphoza, Ganyane, C.9ine, Brickz, Fistaz Mixwell, Vaalsow imprinted on the tracklisting comes a smooth and polished sound. Most of the tracks on the offering come off quite aggressive and harbour a well-rounded party mood as expected, whilst others cater for a more chilled and poolside audience. Which is no surprise, really, considering; they are mixed and selected by the oh-so brilliant Soul Candi Team.
Verdict : Great offering, worth checking out.
MUSIC REVIEW EP
Segundo Music presents a marvellously crafted 2 track EP by Roque, featuring tracks ‘On Fire’ and ‘Hypnotize Your Mind ft Rudelungz. Up first we have a personal favourite of mine ‘On Fire’, which is a unique sounding production by Roque. The track is simple, deep, and comes across as somewhat minimal but carries an array of afro elements that nurture its ambience quite beautifully. And then we have the second offering “Hypnotize Your Mind’ featuring Rudelungz – not necessarily my cup of tea (as it’s a bit too monotonous and drags on for too long for a track without much texture) but it still manages to complement the pack very well, thanks to the vocals that keep dropping in here and there.
Verdict : Lovely offering, highly recommended.

MUSIC REVIEW SINGLE
San Francisco’s Transport Recordings presents Julius Papp special re-edit of Vincent Kwok’s scotching hot single, Afrique. Charting on the second spot in Traxsource Afro House Essentials, this beautiful offering shelters a charming collection of deep haunting vocals (that are sort-off leaning towards what sounds like African chants), as well as a blistered bassline and some smooth strings all wrapped up nicely in the form of an Afrocentric masterpiece – effortlessly crafted by the living legend and NeoDisco Music’s Head Honcho, Julius Papp.
Verdict: One word; BEAUTIFUL !

Born in 1986, Ray Porter is a music producer / radio and club dj, currently based in Gütersloh (Germany). He launched his professional DJ career at the tender age of 16 by becoming a resident Dj on various internet radio stations in and around his country of birth, Germany and he has been making a name for himself then. Now in the current year, Ray is a resident at Germany’s largest Internet radio station RauteMusik.FM and will soon be releasing his first EP, named “Effect”, on MYCore Records.
As a proud native of Cologne Max Beckmann had to face the boredom of being raised in a small Eifel village. His schooldays will always be remembered as the days on which he ditched his homework to wander the world wide web trying to find some special & rare tracks – and although he does not believe in anything else than perfection and self-improvement he has to thank God for the internet offering him access to the underground electronic music scene. And if it wasn’t for his parents he might have never developed a love for funk and disco music. But his influence differs and so you might find some good old school Hip-Hop by Gang Starr or Eins Zwo and Jazz by Grover Washington Jr. or Al Jarreau in his record collection. Getting lost in all different kinds of house and techno music from artists such as St. Germain and Juan Atkins resulted in being eager to learn how to deejay and produce music himself. So what did he do? He got the right hard- and software and just started to do his own thing. Max won’t restrict himself down to only two sub-genres of house music because there is way more to explore. His music won’t lack groove, intensity or deepness and moreover he will make sure it’s danceable, funky and extraordinarily special.
Nobody knows where this journey will end but hopefully it will be long, so this bio will be an adventure to read.
Drew had a these words to share about himself : Hi, I’m Drew. I studied jazz guitar and orchestral composition for a few years in high school, and am now pursuing up a bfa in electroacoustic composition at Concordia University in Montreal. I’m interested in the intersection of electronic music, jazz, electroacoustic and world music and like to combine these and other influences in my own music.
